The role of SGTA is to identify promising start-ups and to take them to the next level of pilot projects, commercialization and identifying global markets for them. STAI shall support them to identify the right technologies and partners and subsequently in evaluation, feasibility and finally in establishing partnerships and setting-up projects. It also taps into the Indian as well as international organisations to raise finance for the companies.
Many Indian start-ups have come-up with strong innovations, which may however find both finance and commercial opportunities in global markets.
We seek prospective clients with the following characteristics (i) a unique and protected and ideally difficult to replicate IP set (ii) some orders (iii) a plausible management team with the capacity to deliver their business plan (iv) some previous track record, even before creation of their business (v) some of their own capital committed to the company
Ideally clients seeking early-stage finance for innovative technologies should also have several application projects ready to proceed (if necessary subject to finance), so delivering the above. It is far easier to finance tech companies if they have IP and also some projects in which to utilise their IP.
Nevertheless start-up clients are unlikely to pay an upfront retainer. Even established companies have some difficulty in securing retained mandates.
Therefore we structure our terms of engagement to take account of payments being made by the client according to some proof of delivery milestones.  Milestones (proposed by us) shall be set and agreed to contractually, and then payments made against delivery at each milestone
We shall run sector specific cohorts where we invite applications from Start-ups on a specific domain starting with Cleantech sector. We will shortlist first 15-20 at the first stage of screening. Will shortlist finally not more than five technologies at POC stage
Finance raising for third parties is, in most countries, a regulated activity, and the SGTA Adviser carrying out the fund-raising activity is authorised to do so. In our case we utilise Climate Capital Cooperative Ltd which is regulated in the UK by the FCA. Climate Capital SARL which is registered in Switzerland is used for Swiss finance raising through this being done by CCC in association with CC Geneva.
